Dr. Hongshuang Guo awarded Academy Fellowship in 2025

Dr. Hongshuang Guo have been awarded a four-year Academy Research Fellowship funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project will be hosted at Tampere University, running from 1.9.2025 to 31.8.2029.

STAR (Smart Biomedical PlaTforms Using Advanced Stimuli-Responsive Materials) is a project aiming to develop a new class of intelligent biomedical platforms based on stimuli-responsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). By integrating dynamic bonding networks and surface biocompatibility modifications, STAR targets innovative applications such as shape-adaptive vascular sensors, pain-reducing sutures, and shape-memory stents. The project will address key challenges in multifunctionality, durability, and biological integration by combining hydrophobic halogen bonds for long-term stability in wet environments with hydrophilic surface treatments to enhance tissue compatibility.

The project builds naturally on the foundation laid during his current postdoctoral project DELTA (Dynamic, Environment-Adaptive Light-Triggered Actuators) and aligns with his long-term vision of developing intelligent, adaptive materials that bridge molecular design and real-world function.

Dr. Hongshuang Guo received his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Tianjin University in 2020. He then joined the Smart Photonic Materials Group led by Prof. Arri Priimägi at Tampere University as a postdoctoral researcher. He was granted a Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2022 and an Academy Research Fellowship in 2025 by the Research Council of Finland.

Congratulations to Dr. Dr. Hongshuang Guo!
