Professor Arri Priimägi from Tampere University has been selected as Finland’s Ambassador for the European Research Council (ERC), part of a new initiative by the ERC and the Association of ERC Grantees to promote frontier research. He joins 31 other Ambassadors from EU and Horizon Europe countries, all chosen from over 200 ERC grantees to serve one-year terms, renewable up to six years.

Priimägi, whose research focuses on soft functional materials, is part of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in Life-Inspired Hybrid Materials and the Photonics Flagship PREIN. He sees the ambassadorship as a way to advocate for curiosity-driven research and highlight the global uniqueness of ERC funding, which plays a vital role in enabling both fundamental and applied science.
As an Ambassador, Priimägi aims to boost ERC grant applications in Finland and raise awareness of the long-term value of scientific research. He emphasizes that many transformative innovations stem from years of fundamental research and calls for sustained funding and diverse academic perspectives to support future breakthroughs.
